Correction to: Intensification and Northward extension of Northwest Pacific anomalous anticyclone in El Niño decaying mid-summer: an energetic perspective

چکیده

The Northwest Pacific (NWP) anomalous anticyclone (AAC) intensifies and extends northward from El Nino decaying early to mid-summer, despite Nino-induced sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the North Indian Ocean, Atlantic subtropical NWP. present study suggests intra-seasonal variations of AAC are induced by local mean state changes investigates underlying mechanisms perspective energetics. Compared with summer, efficiency dry energy conversion flow Nino-excited pattern increases mid-summer. moist feedback over NWP is also enhanced mid-summer due onset climatological summer monsoon. Both them contribute intensification pattern. Moreover, East Asia–NWP found favor shift preferred latitude circulation anomalies. Thus, more northward-extended Empirical orthogonal function analyses further confirm that extension stems internal dynamic mode. highlights both SST atmospheric dynamics paramount importance for summer.

Response of the Indian Ocean Basin Mode and Its Capacitor Effect to Global Warming*

The development of the Indian Ocean basin (IOB) mode and its change under global warming are investigated using a pair of integrations with the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Climate Model version 2.1 (CM2.1). In the simulation under constant climate forcing, the El Niño–induced warming over the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) and its capacitor effect on summer northwest Pacific climate are ...

On the Phase Relations between the Western North Pacific, Indian, and Australian Monsoons*

The phase relationships of the western North Pacific (WNP) summer monsoon (WNPM) with the Australian monsoon (AM) and Indian monsoon (IM) are investigated using observational rainfall, SST, and NCEP reanalysis data for the period of 1979–2005. It is found that a strong WNPM often follows a strong AM but leads a weak AM, and a significant simultaneous negative correlation appears between WNPM an...

Seasonally Evolving Dominant Interannual Variability Modes of East Asian Climate*

A season-reliant empirical orthogonal function (S-EOF) analysis is applied to seasonal mean precipitation over East Asia for the period of 1979–2004. The first two dominant modes account for 44% of the total interannual variance, corresponding to post-ENSO and ENSO turnabout years, respectively. The first mode indicates that in El Niño decaying summer, an anomalous anticyclone appears over the ...

Predictability of Northwest Pacific climate during summer and the role of the Tropical Indian Ocean

2 ABSTRACT A seasonal forecast system based on a global, fully coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model is used to (i) evaluate the interannual predictability of the Northwest Pacific climate during June-August following El Niño [JJA(1)], and (ii) examine the contribution from the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) variability. The model retrospective forecast for 1983-2006 captures major mo...

Indian Ocean capacitor effect on Indo-western Pacific climate during the summer following El Nino

Significant climate anomalies persist through the summer (June-August) after El Nino dissipates in spring over the equatorial Pacific. They include the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) sea surface temperature (SST) warming, increased tropical tropospheric temperature, an anomalous anticyclone over the subtropical Northwest Pacific, and increased Meiyu-Baiu rainfall over East Asia. The cause of these...
